Where to stay in Milos for first-timers?

If you’ve never been to Milos before and thinking about what area to stay in Milos, choose Adamas.

Adamas Milos

Adamas Milos

Best for | Island hoppers, friends groups, nightlife lovers, and action lovers.

Adamas Milos Greece, also known as Adamantas, is one of the most popular areas on Milos. It is also where most visitors choose to stay and where passengers arrive on ferries from other Greek islands or Athens.

If you don’t want to spend too long researching where to stay on Milos, stay in Adamas. Adamas is the best place to stay in Milos for convenience and nightlife and an obvious where to stay in Milos place for first-timers!

Adamas is a busy port village with a myriad of cafes, restaurants and bars. You can expect good nightlife here and a wide range of hotels in Milos – from luxury hotels to backpacker hostels.

The main street of Adamas runs along the port, and most Milos accommodation is located within walking distance of the port. Also, Adamas has plenty of tourist shops and stands where you can book various boat tours and kayaking tours around the island.

The advantage of staying in Adamas is being close to the action that is happening on the island. It is not as busy as Santorini’s Fira or Mykonos’ old town, but it certainly has a dynamic vibe. If you don’t want to rent a car, you should definitely stay in Adamas, which has great bus connections with the rest of the island.

The town of Adamas also boasts two excellent beaches – Lagada Beach in the heart of the town centre and Papkinou Beach, located within a 15-minute walk.

Another awesome advantage of staying in Adamantas Milos is its central location. From here, visiting other parts of the island, both south to Paleochori, east to Pollonia and Serakiniko and north, will be super easy.

In short, if you’re a first-timer and looking for where to stay in Milos, choose Adamas!

Where to stay on Milos for families?

What is the best area to stay in Milos for families? In this section, you will find 3 best places to stay in Milos Greece if you’re travelling with children. 🙂

Pollonia Milos

Pollonia Milos Aerial shot

Best for | Families and a relaxing vacation.

Pollonia Milos is a small and quiet fishing village located in the northeast part of Milos, 18 minutes drive from Milos airport, 16 minutes to Adamas and 12 minutes to the famous Sarakiniko Beach.

It is known to be a family-friendly place with a good range of accommodation that caters for parents with children.

Pollonia has a fantastic beach, excellent for waking up early and watching the sunrise. Pollonia Beach has golden, soft sand, and the sea here is shallow and calm – perfect for swimmers of all levels. It is also less windy compared to other beaches in Milos.

Despite being a small town, Pollonia features an excellent range of Greek tavernas that are lining up its harbour.

Pollonia has a small port where you can catch a boat to Kimolos Island, which I highly recommend for a day trip.

Pollonia also boasts two quaint churches – Saint Nicholas Church and Agia Paraskevi Church, which also provide great panoramic views over the entire town and coast.

If you’re looking for where to stay in Milos for you and your family, where the local people are friendly, and the area is quiet but with good dining options, choose Pollonia.

Pollonia or Adamas Milos?

Not sure whether to stay in Adamas or Pollonia? Both towns have good hotel options and a range of restaurants and cafes to keep you excited at dinner time. Also, both locations have good beaches.

Pollonia’s location is more remote compared to the central location of Adamas. Adamas is better if you’re planning to get around the island by bus and if you enjoy a little bit of nightlife.

Pollonia is better for tranquillity, but you may need a car here.

Paleochori Beach

paleochori beach milos

Best for | Beach and nature lovers, explorers, family-friendly, luxury hotels.

Paleochori Beach is situated a 15 minutes drive southeast of Adamas Port, and it’s very well connected by the local bus services that run few times a day during the summer season. Tsigrado Beach is 25 minutes drive west of Paliachori Beach.

Paleochori or Paliachori is the most colourful beach on Milos with red and pink rocks, golden sand and contrasting turquoise, crystal clear water. The beach is also one of the calmest because it is shielded from the wind.

It stretches for a few kilometres, and it is considered one of the best beaches in Milos. There are plenty of sun loungers and parasols to rent out for the day and a range of beach restaurants and bars serving delicious food and drinks until the sunset.

This area of the island is also Milos places to stay for beach lovers. Apart from Paleochori beach, you will also find here other epic beaches of Milos such as Tsigrado, Agia Kiriaki and Firiplaka beaches.

Paleochori gets very quiet at night, so if you rather stay somewhere with a vibrant nightlife, choose Adamas instead.

Finally, this area of Milos has a good selection of accommodation, from luxury hotels to budget stays.

Fun Fact: Paliachori was the site of the discovery of the Milos Hoard, a collection of Milian coins now on exhibit at the London Numismatic Museum.

Where to stay in Milos Greece for history lovers?

This section will answer the question of where is the best place to stay in Milos if you’re a history lover!

Plaka Milos

church in Milos Plaka

Best for | Travellers interested in culture, history and architecture.

Plaka is the capital town of the island and the best town to stay in Milos Greece, for culture and history enthusiasts. Perched on a hill, it boasts panoramic views all around. The vistas don’t get any better on Milos, because from Plaka, you can see not only sunset but sunrise as well!

Plaka Milos village dates back to the 18th century as an extension of its Kastro – the Plaka Castle built on the hilltop for defence purposes against pirate raids and serving as the capital of the whole island.

Make sure you take the hike up to the castle at least once for the epic 360-degree views! The best time to take this hike is in the late afternoon or early morning.

Today, Plaka Milos is a delightful village with as much Cycladic charm as it gets! Picture a maze of narrow, whitewashed alleys, old churches with simple designs, charming domes and picturesque bell towers.

Cars are not allowed to enter because of cobbled narrow streets, and the only permitted vehicles are moppets.

Plaka Milos is a great base for exploring the Catacombs of Milos, the ancient theatre and Milos museums such as the Folk and Historic Milos Museum and Archaeological Museum.

The town of Plaka is a super cool place where to stay in Milos if you don’t mind being away from the beach. The nearest beach is in Klima, and there is a 2.2 km path leading to it. The only thing to keep in mind is that the way back can be a little strenuous and steep, but it’s entirely doable.

If you enjoy history, exploring museums, Cycladic architecture and quaint neighbourhoods, Plaka is the best place to stay Milos for you.

Plaka or Adamas Milos?

Are you hesitating about whether to stay in Plaka or Adamas Milos? Adamas is the port town of Milos with direct access to the sea.

If you stay in Adamas, you will have two beaches within walking distance. Adamas is also super convenient for travellers without a car, as it has the best bus connections with the rest of the island.

Plaka is located inland, an 11-minute drive from Adamas and its nearest beach is in Klima. Also, about a 10-minute drive away. Plaka is the historic capital of the island, and it’s an awesome place to stay in Milos for history lovers as it has some great museums and ancient sites to explore nearby.

Plaka boasts epic views of the whole island and unbeatable Cycladic charm but staying here is not as convenient as in Adamas, and you may need a car to get to the beach.

Best for | Unique and quirky accommodation lovers.

Klima Milos is a traditional fishing village in Milos. It is known for its whitewashed boat houses with colourfully painted doors and windows lined up along the shore.

The colourful boathouses curved in the cave line up the shore of Mandrakia – a truly idyllic village to stay in. There are a few unique places to stay in Mandrakia, which I will share with you below.

Local people still live in the village, and staying in this friendly little community will make it super special. Mandrakia boasts an excellent restaurant – Medusa, which serves top-notch local dishes and is one of the best restaurants in Milos! There are also more dining options a few minutes drive away from the village.

Mandrakia is an excellent base for visiting the most famous beaches on Milos – Serakiniko beach with its moon-like landscape and Firopotamos beach. Both are located only within a few kilometres; Serakiniko is east, and Firopotamos is west of Mandrakia village.

Firopotamos Milos

Firopotamos Milos, beaches milos

Best for | Tranquillity, nature, ruins, luxury accommodation away from it all.

Playfully named, a small fishing village on Milos – Firopotamos is situated in Milos’ remote, northern part. I say remote, but really if you wanted to walk from Plaka, it would take around 40 minutes which is not bad at all.

Firopotamos is a genuinely picturesque place with golden cliffs, alluring turquoise water and white and blue typical Cycladic architecture. If you’re looking for a completely ‘away from it all‘ location, look no further.

Firopotamos is tinny, which also means minimal choices of accommodation. Most rentals are located on Firopotamos beach, which you can find just across the bay from the fishing village. It’s a gorgeous and tranquil beach surrounded by cliffs with turquoise water lapping gently against the shore.

During the summer, you can rent umbrellas and sun loungers on the beach, outside of the high-season months, Firopotamos has no facilities.

In short, if you’re looking for which area to stay in Milos, for a tranquil beach holiday, Firopotamos is perfect! Make sure you can rent a car, scooter or an ATV to stay connected with the rest of the island.

Where to stay in Milos for the local vibe?

Tripiti Milos

Tripiti Milos

Best for | History enthusiasts, outdoor fans, boutique accommodation lovers, and local vibe.

Tripiti, also spelt Trypiti is a small village located east of Plaka and is considered its extension. The town is famous for its iconic white windmills that are located at the top of the settlement. Some of them date all the way back to the 18th century and are converted to unique holiday rentals.

Tripiti means ‘holes’, and it was named after many holes in the surrounding rocks.

This area of Milos is steeped in ancient history. Tripiti is an excellent base for exploring the Ancient Amphitheatre of Milos and the early Christian Catacombs located nearby. If you are a history buff, you’ll love this area of Milos!

Also, you probably saw or remember from history lessons the Venus of Milos (also called Aphrodite of Milos), the most famous statue from Ancient Greece that established a modern canon of female beauty. The statue was discovered not far from Tripiti, and today you can see it in Louvre Paris.

Another thing to remember is that Tripiti village is situated on a hill, so you will have to climb some steep streets wherever you go, which may not suit everyone. However, if you are an outdoor enthusiast, you’ll love it here for the many walks you can take, including the Prophet Elias Hill, from where you can get some epic views of the surrounding areas.

Tripiti is quiet but also has a wide selection of good restaurants and cafes.

Pros
  • Budget accommodation
  • Great dining options
  • Good hikes nearby
Cons
  • Far away from beaches

Triovasalos Milos

Triovasalos MIlos, where to stay in milos

Best for | Authentic, living like a local experience and budget accommodation.

Triovasalos consists of two villages that merge into one: Triovasalos and Pera Triovasalos. They are located 2 km east of Plaka, a 10-minute drive from Adamantas and a similar distance from Klima beach and the village.

Triovasalos is not touristy at all. If you want to stay somewhere where you can immerse yourself in the local culture, this may be Milos best area to stay.

Triovasalos has a good selection of restaurants and shops, don’t miss out on a dinner at O Belivanis local tavern and superb coffee at Coffee Time. If you need more dining options, Plaka is a short drive away.

And, because the village is not really where mainstream tourists decide to stay, accommodation is well-priced.

In short, Triovasalos may be a good place where to stay in Milos for those looking for a live-like-a-local experience!

Pros
  • Local vibe
  • Well-priced accommodation
  • Away from the crowds
  • 10 min drive to Adamas & Klima
Cons
  • No beach within a walking distance

Where is Milos Greece?

Tsigrado beach
Tsigrado, Milos

Milos is a Greek island situated on the Aegean Sea. It belongs to a group of islands called the Cyclades. There are 30 islands in the group, including the most famous Santorini and Mykonos, and others such as Paros, Naxos, Sifnos, Sifnos and Ios. Milos is the southwesternmost of the Cycladic islands.

How to get to Milos, Greece?

Milos Paros ferry
Passengers arriving at Milos Greece

By Ferry

The most common way of getting to Milos is taking a ferry either from Athens or, if you’re island hopping in the Cyclades, from another island. Several companies service the route between the Cycladic islands in Greece, and these are Seajets, Blue Star and Aegean Speed Lines

If you want to save some money on the ferries that can be costly, especially if you’re island hopping, I recommend booking your fares way in advance. I always use Ferry Scanner to look for the best tickets.

If you’re planning your trip to Milos during peak season, booking your ferry in advance makes even more sense, especially if you’re not very flexible on dates. If you book online, Ferry Scanner offers an extended free cancellation period in case your plans change.

When searching for tickets, you will also notice that slower ferries can be a lot cheaper, so if you don’t mind a 2-3 hours longer trip, booking a slower ferry can be a good way of saving some money.

Travelling on ferries is an experience in its own right! Remember to arrive early as the boarding process and loading of the vehicles is swift, and boats don’t wait around and usually leave on time.

Also, always check ahead of time if your ferry is scheduled to go on time. Ferry services rely on good sea conditions, and cancellations are common, especially in September and October when there are more chances of strong winds.

Ferry Athens Milos

A very common route of getting to Milos is taking an international flight to Athens and getting from Athens to Milos on a ferry. The airport in Athens is well connected with the city, and it is possible to take a metro from the airport to the ferry port of Piraeus. Take Line 3 from the airport to the city centre – Monastiraki – and then Green Line 1 to the port.

The Athens Milos ferry takes anything from 2.5 to 4 hours and arrives at Adamas Port, which is Milos’s main port.

Ferry from Santorini to Milos

Another popular route is Santorini to Milos. The journey time is 2 hours on a fast Seajets ferry and up to 7 hours if you’re travelling indirectly. Santorini is one of the most spectacular and super famous Greek islands. Even though it is super crowded and largely overpriced, I would recommend going for at least one day to see for yourself what’s all the fuss is about.

Ferry Paros Milos

If you’re travelling from Paros, expect 1.5 hours on a fast ferry and up to 6 hours on a slow ferry. Paros is also a great island to explore, with many quaint and historic towns and stunning Cycladic architecture.

Ferry Sifnos to Milos

Sifnos is the closest island to Milos, and a ferry ride takes as short as 30 min. Sifnos is a great island to visit on a day trip from Milos if you’re short on time.

Ferry Naxos Milos

Naxos to Milos takes just over 2 hours with Seajets. If you’re a beach lover, you’d like to know that Naxos has some of the best beaches in the Cyclades.

By Plane – Airport in Milos

If you rather avoid the Athens Milos boat journey, you’ll be pleased to know that you can also catch a flight. Milos airport is very small and only operates a few flights between Athens and Milos by Olympic Airlines/Aegean and Sky Express.

Getting from Milos Airport to Adamas is fairly straightforward. The airport is located 4.7 km southwest of port Adamas. If you’re renting a car, you can pick it up at the airport or take a taxi. It is also possible to get to Adamas. If you’re staying in Pollonia, you can get a connecting bus from Adamas harbour. More remote places will most likely require a taxi ride.

I’m leaving the link to the Milos bus schedule, which varies slightly depending on the season.

Check Bus Timetable Here

Getting around Milos

Milos Buses

Milos’s main towns, such as Adamas, Pollonia, Plaka and even Paliochori, are well connected by bus services. If you don’t want to drive or want to save some money, this is a great way to explore the island. Check Milos Buses’ schedule here. The only thing to keep in mind is that there will be fewer connections if you’re visiting off-season.

Car Rental Milos

Another popular way to get around Milos is car hire. Milos is a large island, and having a car will give you a lot of freedom to explore even the lesser frequented, off-beaten track places. Hiring a car is great if you travel in a group and can spread the cost between a few people.

I usually use DiscoverCars to search for the best car rental option and always opt-in for the full insurance coverage to save myself unpleasantries such as paying an excess fee for damages.

Car Hire Milos

ATV Rental Milos

Hiring an ATV is another popular way to explore the island. Many of the roads in Milos are unpaved, which is perfect for an ATV, plus driving it can be a lot of fun. You can hire one when you get to Milos. Prices will be higher during the high season – July to August, and considerably lower outside of that time. Expect to pay between €15 to €50 per day.
