#1 Agios Georgios Beach Naxos

agios georgios beach naxos

Where is Agios Georgios Naxos Beach?

The beach of Agios Georgios is located just a short walk from Chora, which is the island’s capital and the Naxos Port. For that reason, it is also often referred to as Naxos town beach or Naxos Chora beach. The island’s port is also located nearby – only 3 km away, and Agios Georgios is definitely the most accessible Naxos beach.

Who is Agios Georgios Best for?

Most first-timers to Naxos (including me) decide to stay near Agios Georgios Naxo, and it’s a fantastic choice for anyone, especially those who don’t want to rent a car. The northern side is excellent for families and the southern end for nightlife enthusiasts. Agios Georgios is also an ideal place for kitesurfing learners, thanks to its shallow waters and strong wind at its most southern tip. Agios Georgios is a good beach but by no means the most spectacular on the island, for that check the off-beaten track beaches of Naxos section.

Hot to Get to St George Beach Naxos?

You can reach St George beach on foot from the port, and the walk will take about 15 minutes or a 6-minute drive.

Agios Georgios Naxos

What to Expect at Agios Georgios?

Naxos Agios Georgios Beach is the closest beach to Naxos Town and an excellent place to base yourself if you’re a first-timer to the island. Paralia Agios Georgios is situated no longer than a 15-minutes walk from the heart of the old town. The beach stretches over a few kilometres and boasts soft, golden sand and clear, shallow waters.

As you approach the beach of Agios Georgios Greece from its northern side or Chora Town, you can walk on a wooden bridge built along its edge. This part of the beach is mostly quiet, with a few beach bars and restaurants lined up along it. There are also a few places that rent umbrellas and sunbeds and offer drink service throughout the day. There is also a lifeguard on-site, and the water is super shallow and calm, perfect for kids. Perhaps, because of that, families in particular like this part of the beach. But the beach is super chill and really is good for anyone. The only thing that may be a little annoying is that the water is very, very shallow, and it takes quite a long walk in before it gets deep enough to swim.

I particularly enjoyed staying in this part of the beach and spending time sipping a cocktail or a beer in Vammos Beach Bar Naxos.

Going further south, the beach crowd gets a little younger, and beach bars and restaurants are a little fancier. In this part of Agios Georgios Naxos beach, the vibe is more lively with music playing in the beach bars and cocktails being served, and people partying until the sunset and beyond. If you’re looking for the best Agios Georgios nightlife spot, come to this part.

The very southern edge of Agios Georgios Naxos Greece Beach gets a lot of wind, and it’s where you’ll see lots of windsurfing enthusiasts. And, thanks to the decent amount of wind and super shallow water, this area is perfect for trying windsurfing for the first time. If you ever wanted to learn this incredible water sport, this part of Agios Georgios village is excellent, with a couple of local windsurfing schools to choose from.

Best Time to Visit St George Beach?

agios georgios beach naxos

Agios Georgios Beach is great to visit any time of the day. As the beach is ‘attached’ to the Chora town, most visitors that come to this beach stay nearby. I particularly enjoyed Agios Georgios beach in the afternoon for a drink, and since the beach is west-facing, it is also excellent during sunset time.

If you’re on Naxos during the high season (July and August) and travelling by car, I recommend getting to Agios Georgios in the morning to ensure you have somewhere to park!

TIP | If you’re staying elsewhere on the island, you can combine visiting Naxos Town with a few hours of chill on the beach.

Things to Know/Take With You

Shallow water | Agios Georgios has super shallow water, which is great for kids’ safety but a little annoying for everyone else. The water gets only deep enough to swim after 100-200 meters of walking in.

Parking | A couple of municipal parking lots close to the beach offer parking free of charge; however, they fill up very quickly. Unless you arrive early in the morning during July or August, it’s impossible to find a space in those parking lots. There are also a few paid car parks, for example, Parkin that offers 24 hours parking and some cleaning services too,

Location | Municipal parking, municipal car park by the shore

#2 Agia Anna Beach

Agia Anna Beach Naxos

Where is Agia Anna Naxos?

Agia Anna town with its incredibly stunning beach is situated on the northern coast of Naxos island, 7 km south of its lively capital town and port – Naxos Town. Despite being so close to the busiest part of the island, the vibe in Agia Anna couldn’t be more different.

Agios Anna Naxos is also close to some of the most incredible beaches of Naxos, such as Agios Prokopios Beach and Plaka Beach, which are both located only a short drive away.

Hot to get to Agia Anna Naxos?

Agia Anna Beach Naxos

Agia Anna beach is situated only a few kilometres away from Chora and you can easily get here with a car, scooter or ATV. If vehicle rental is not in your budget that is not a problem at all because it is also possible to get here by bus from Naxos Town.

Take Line 1 or 10 to get from Naxos port to Agia Anna Naxos town or Agia Anna beach. Bus Naxos Chora Agia Anna should take around 20 minutes and cost €1.8 or $2.

What to expect at Agia Anna Beach Naxos

Agia Anna Beach stretches along with the town and attracts with shallow, azure waters that stay calm most of the time and is perfect for swimming for anyone, even children. Agia Anna Beach is lined up with Naxos Agia Anna Beach restaurants. Some of them are really cool with interesting boho decor. Most of them offer sunbeds and umbrellas for daily rent, but there is also plenty of space to stretch your own towel.

At the end of the beach, boat cruises leave daily to the nearby Greek islands such as Kaufonissi from a small jetty. And a short walk away from the village centre, you can find a quaint white and blue church of Saint Nicholas. Walk behind the church, for stunning, panoramic vistas of Agia Anna and some interesting rock formations. You can find here a secluded spot and enjoy your little, private beach for a romantic time or just a relaxing time by yourself. Nearby, you can also find here one of the nude beaches Naxos and other Greek islands are famous for.

Agia Anna beach is also very close to Agios Prokopios beach, and you can take a casual 16 minutes stroll there.

If you need more information about Agia Anna, you can find it here – A Guide to Agia Anna Naxos Beach

Who is Agia Anna Best For?

Agia Anna is the perfect beach for those that want to enjoy a more quiet beach than Agios Georgios but still want to be close to good dining options and chic beach clubs that are a little more chilled and quiet. Agia Anna is suitable for children and it’s also great for couples that enjoy a small-town charm.

Best Time to Visit Agia Anna Naxos Beach?

Agia Anna Naxos

For those that want to stay on Agia Anna Beach for the day, late morning is the best time to arrive. You will get the sunshine already on the beach, but it will be early enough to pick the best sunbeds and umbrellas or a spot for your towel. If you want to add more interesting places to your day trip itinerary, consider also checking out Plaka Beach and Agios Prokopios Beach.

Things to Know/Take to Agia Anna Beach

Naxos Nude Beach | If a nudist beach is your cup of tea, there is one near Agia Anna town. You can walk here from town or park near Paradiso Taverna and take a boardwalk. The nudist area is to the left of the wooden path before it bends.

Parking | There is a free public car park lot in Agia Anna, I’m leaving its location here. Agia Anna town is not as busy as Chora and parking here should be much easier. If you won’t find the place in the municipal parking lot, try street parking away from the town centre.

Best Places to Eat on Agia Anna Beach

Paradiso Taverna | Agia Anna taverna with epic settings, on the beach and excellent Greek cuisine

Other Attractions Near Agia Anna

Agia Anna beach is close to Agios Prokopios and Plaka beaches which will be reviewed in this post later on. You can also combine Agia Anna Beach with visiting the traditional Cycladic villages of Vivlos, Filoti or Halki.

If you’re interested in learning more about the last village check out the full Guide to Halki Naxos

Filoti Naxos is the largest village on the Cyclades island Naxos, built on the slopes of mount Zas with some spectacular island views, traditional Cycladic architecture with sugar cube houses, quaint churches and whitewashed alleys. The most picturesque part of Filoti is a small square, home to Panagia Filotitissa Church. In Filoti, you can feel the local vibe and really see how the people live outside of the touristy areas.  Filoti is also an excellent destination for outdoor enthusiasts! Perhaps, the most popular hike to do in Filoti is the Mount Zas trail.

#3 Maragas Beach Naxos

maragas naxos

Where is Maragas Beach?

Maragas Beach is located 8 km from Naxos Port and Chora and 9 minutes from Naxos Airport Apollon. Maragas is a lively stretch of sandy beach sandwiched between Agia Anna Beach from the north and Plaka beach from the south. The iconic Paradiso Taverna is only a few minutes walk from the northern end of Maragas beach.

Hot to get to Maragkas Naxos?

As Maragas beach is located only 8 km from Naxos, it is an easy drive to do in a rented car. The only thing to be aware of is that the road that runs along Maragas beach is a dirt track road that often gets very dusty in the summer.

If you’re not an experienced driver, you may find this road a little challenging. The dirt track road may be even more challenging if you’re riding a scooter for the first time. ATV vehicles are much better in this scenario. They are made for those types of roads and are super easy to drive. They are however much more expensive than scooters.

Another option for getting to Maragas Beach is taking a bus from Chora. You can find the bus terminal on the main road by the port. Take Line 1 which goes all the way to Mikri Vigla and stops at Maragas Beach Naxos.

maragas Beach naxos

What to expect at Maragas Naxos Beach?

Maragas beach stretches along the coast, south of the town of Agia Anna until Plaka Beach. It belongs in this section because Maragas is one of the lively best beaches on Naxos. Here, you will find various beach clubs that offer comfy sunbeds and umbrellas for rent and drinks and food served all day long. Some of them have a lively party vibe, others are more chilled and quiet. Maragas beach enjoys shallow and calm waters that are perfect for swimming. It also boasts soft, golden sand.

Maragas Beach Naxos can get very busy due to the nearby Maragas camping site that serves a young crowd that enjoys a good party. Across the dirt track road that runs along the beach, you can find a decent selection of local tavernas and restaurants where you can enjoy dinner after spending time on the beach.

As you continue south, along the coast, Maragas Beach gets quieter and less busy. Here there is also a possibility to enjoy various water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing.

Who is Maragas Best For?

Maragas Beach is excellent for couples wanting to enjoy a lively location and beach club comforts. It is also a great beach for doing watersports and taking windsurfing lessons.  Maragas Beach on Naxos is also a great destination for a day trip from Chora.

Best Time to Visit Maragas Beach

Maragas Beach is good at any time of the day. If you prefer fewer people around you on the beach, choose morning until lunchtime. I visited Maragas in September in the middle of the day and it was not overcrowded at all. Maragas Beach is also excellent at sunset!

Things to Know/Take to Maragas Beach

Dirt Road | As I mentioned above, be aware of the tricky road and hire a vehicle that you’re comfortable driving in the off-road conditions.

Parking | You can park your vehicle along the dirt track road, just make sure you don’t block any beach entrances.

When you arrive at Maragas Beach and you see that is too busy for your liking, continue driving south to the part which is normally way quitter.

Best Places to eat on Maragas Beach Naxos

Cedar Cafe Naxos | Bohemian vibe and soul music with light bites and good drinks.

#4 Plaka Beach Naxos

Plaka Beach Naxos

Where is Plaka Naxos?

Plaka Beach is located on the western coast of Naxos island, a 20-minute drive from Chora Naxos Town and the island’s ferry port. If you’re arriving by plane, Naxos airport is only 6 km away from Plaka Greece. Despite being so close to the lively Chora and popular town of Agia Anna, Plaka Beach Naxos is a tranquil oasis where you can truly unwind for the day, or even better, have an off-grid vacation.

Plaka Naxos is also a short walk from Maragas Beach Naxos – a more lively area littered with chic beach clubs, water sports facilities and restaurants for when feel like being around the people more.

Plaka beach stretches for a good few kilometres along the coast and it’s accessible by car, scooter or ATV vehicle. A large chunk of the road leading to Plaka Naxos is a dirt track so have that in mind when choosing the rental vehicle.

You can set your satnav to take you to Medusa Resort. Right by the beach, there is a large parking area where you can leave your vehicle free of charge. Another beach entry point can be found at its southern end, near Mandala Beach Club. At this end, you can leave your vehicle on the side of the road.

It is also possible to get to Plaka Beach Naxos by bus Line 1 which runs multiple times a day from Chora.

What to expect at Plaka Beach on Naxos?

Plaka Beach Naxos

Plaka Beach is considered to be one of the best beaches of Naxos! Plaka stretches over a few kilometres and its coast is largely underdeveloped with only a few hotels and guest houses and a couple of restaurants. The beach has soft, dark golden sand and crystal clear water that has a beautiful turquoise shade and is shallow and perfect for swimming.

The northern end of Plaka Beach has more amenities, a few beach bars and sunbeds & parasol rentals. It is also where Medusa resort is located. North of Medusa, there is a more lively area of Maragas Beach littered with chic Naxos beach bars, sunbeds rentals and restaurants. Here, you will also find water sports facilities such as windsurfing classes and standup paddleboards rentals.

Plaka Beach Naxos

The southern end is completely untouched and this is where you can find a quiet spot for a relaxing beach day. Make sure you pack plenty of water and snacks with you as there aren’t many shops nearby. Also, take a towel, a good book to read or a relaxing playlist and enjoy the pristine beach, the sound of waves and the calm waters.

At the very southern end of Plaka, you’ll find Mandala Beach, with a few sunbeds, which is also a gorgeous spot for a beach day. In September, when I visited the sunbeds were €10 for the set and the beach was almost entirely empty. There is also a small cafe on the beach that sells cold drinks and light bites, perfect for lunch. The place felt like a slice of paradise.

What to expect at Orkos?

Orkos Beach is a very small beach that you will find along the coast, just before the capital of kitesurfing – Mikri Vigla. When visiting for the first time, we couldn’t find it and had to go back. But, once we found it, we realised what a good spot that is!

Orkos beach Naxos boasts golden, powdery sand and turquoise water. The beach is a little more secluded from the wind that blows towards the main kitesurfing beach and it is also separated from the main road by a bunch of trees.

Orkos Naxos

There are no sunbeds or tavernas on this beach, it is just a stretch of sand and almost no one around. In order to find a place to eat, head towards Mikri Vigla which has a few good spots. If you wanted to stay near Orkos Beach there are a few small hotels and private apartments to rent, inland from Orkos beach.

Who is Orkos Beach Naxos Best for?

Orkos Beach is a great place to relax. It is a beach that you would choose if you stayed in the local area. For those that are passing by on a day trip, Orkos Naxos is not really a destination in its own right. There are way more impressive beaches nearby!

Best Off The Beaten Track Beaches in Naxos

In this section, you will find the best beaches Naxos Greece possesses that are a little more remote and a little harder to get to, and thanks to that they are never overcrowded!

#7 Hawaii Beach Naxos

hawaii beach naxos

Where is Naxos Hawaii Beach?

Separated with a cedar forest from the rest of the coast, you will find the best beach in Naxos Greece (in my modest opinion) called Hawaii, for a good reason!

Hot to get to Hawaii Naxos?

Hawaii Beach is located about 18 km from Chora and the best way to get here is with a rented car or an ATV vehicle. A considerable part of the road to Hawaii Naxos is via a dirt track road, so make sure you are happy with the vehicle of your choice.

You can also get to Hawaii by bus. Take Line 3 and get off at Alyko bus stop. From the bus stop, walk right where you will find a cliff. Down the cliff, you will find one of the most beautiful beaches Naxos is renowned for!

The slope to access the beach.
hawaii beach naxos
The view at the top of the cliff.

What to expect at Hawaii Beach Naxos?

As Hawaii Beach is surrounded by a cliff, you will have to climb down to get to the beach. There are two places where it is safe to do it, and I recommend choosing the one on the northern end (on your right when you face the sea). Make sure you are wearing trainers or sports sandals to be able to safely descend the slope.

Once you reach the beach, you will realise how beautiful the cliff is with hues of red and pink! The cliff also provides natural shade so you don’t need your umbrella with you. The beach is free from any infrastructure so make sure you bring everything you need for the day!

Who is Hawaii Naxos Best for?

As I mentioned earlier, Hawaii is by far my favourite of all beaches of Naxos. It has this wow effect, however, it may not be the best Naxos beach for young children. Apart from the tricky beach access, the sea gets deep quite quickly here.

Best time to visit Hawaii Beach Naxos

My favourite time for visiting Hawaii Beach Naxos was the early afternoon and if you only have one day for this part of Naxos, make sure you also check out the beach of Aliko Naxos with a super picturesque chapel!

Things to know/take to Hawaii Beach Naxos

Take with you sturdy shoes to descend the cliff safely, water and a packed lunch as there are no shops or restaurants in this area, plenty of suncream and umbrella.

Other Attractions near Hawaii Beach Naxos

When visiting Hawaii Beach Naxos, make sure to also check out Aliko Beach located within a short walk from Hawaii and Pyrgaki Beach which is also close by, only a few minutes drive away where you can find a few tavernas for lunch and sunbeds rental.

#8 Aliko Beach Naxos

Aliko Beach Naxos

Where is Aliko Naxos?

Set in a cedar forest, Aliko Beach attracts with a secluded location and a long stretch of golden sand with pretty, rusty hues. You can find Aliko Beach Naxos, halfway down the northern coast of the island, just under half an hour drive from Naxos Town.

Hot to get to Alyko Naxos?

Apart from driving to Alyko yourself, there is also a local bus that stops near the beach. It’s Line 3 from Chora, and I’m leaving the link to the bus timetable at the end of the post, in the ‘How to get around Naxos’ section. The bus stops on the road a few minutes walk to the beach and then continues to Pyrgaki Beach. If you’re unsure where to get off, just ask the driver about Paralia Aliko.

Alyko Beach Naxos

What to expect at Alyko Beach Naxos?

Alyko Naxos is a remote golden beach framed by shallow azure waters and lush greenery. Aliko Naxo Beach is all about bringing your own picnic and a towel and spending a relaxing day away from screaming kids and blasting beach clubs music! If this sounds like you’re cup of tea, then Aliko is your place. There are no sunbeds or beach bars on Aliko Beach, instead, you will find here a picturesque bay with a quaint church perched on one end

If you want to take some beautiful photos, walk up to the church, then take photos of the beach with the chapel in the foreground. Behind the church, there is also an abandoned hotel that has been decorated with colourful graffiti. Aliko is one of the top beaches Naxos possesses, for nature lovers!

Alyko Beach Naxos

Who is Aliko Naxos Best for?

Aliko Beach is excellent for nature lovers and those wanting to spend a day on a remote beach, away from the noise, but also from the usual beach facilities.

Best time to visit Alyko Naxos

As Alyko Naxos is situated in remote, less accessible locations, it never gets overcrowded. So, if you’re planning to have a beach day at Aliko, you can arrive any time of the day. For those interested in photographing Aliko Naxos Beach, morning or late afternoon is the best time that receives the best light.

Things to know/take to Aliko Beach

If you’re into photography, get your camera fully charged as Alyko Naxos is super charming! Also, take your own towel, umbrella, plenty of water and snacks with you to last you the whole day.

#9 Pyrgaki Beach Naxos

Pyrgaki Beach naxos

Where is Pyrgaki Naxos Beach?

Pyrgaki Beach is located a 30-minutes drive from Naxos Town, down the northern coast, and it is the most remote beach I review in this article. The area of Pyrgaki has a few good local tavernas and a couple of small hotels, so it is entirely possible to stay here if you wish. Pyrgaki Beach is also close to Aliko and Hawaii beaches.

Hot to get to Pyrgaki (Pyrgos Beach Naxos)?

You can drive to Pyrgaki yourself or take a bus Line 3 that comes from Chora, stops at the most popular beaches such as Agios Prokopios and Plaka with the last stop at Pyrgaki.

Pyrgaki Beach
Pyrgaki Beach Naxos
Pyrgaki Beach

What to expect at Pyrgaki (Pirgaki Naxos)?

The road to Pyrgaki is a dirt track road with a lot of sand. When you arrive, you can park your vehicle right by the beach. Pyrgaki Beach is long and wide with a mixture of sand and small stones. There is plenty of space to stretch your own towel and for those that prefer sun loungers, there is a small patch with comfy sunbeds and umbrellas for rent

The seawater at Pyrgaki Beach is super calm, and for the water sports enthusiasts, there is a standup paddleboard rental, which is super fun to do there! Also, a few local tavernas along the beach serve local food in case you get hungry.

Pyrgaki Beach naxos

Who is Pyrgaki Best for?

Pyrgaki Beach is an excellent place for those that seek peace and quiet but want to have the comfort of the sunbeds and a choice of a few places to eat. The beach is great for couples and families alike.

Best time to visit Pyrgaki Beach Naxos

Any time of the day is good to visit Pyrgaki Naxos!

Things to know/take to Pyrgaki Beach

Pyrgaki Beach naxos

Sandy road & a hill | A word of warning – on the road that leads to Pyrgaki, there is a very sandy hill, so watch out if you’re on a scooter! I actually fell off my scooter on that hill! A moppet was my main mode of transport when I lived in Bali, so I consider myself a fairly experienced driver. So, if you don’t have much experience with riding a scooter, I recommend renting a car or an ATV instead, or leaving your moppet on the main road and walking to Pyrgaki.

#10 Mikri Vigla Naxos

Mikri vigla naxos

Where is Mikri Vigla Beach Naxos?

Mikri Vigla Beach is located south of Plaka Beach and a 25-minutes drive from Naxos Town. The Naxos Airport Apollon is 8 km away. Mikri Vigla is one of the best beaches in Naxos island or maybe even the best for kite and windsurfing!

Mikri Vigla Naxos

Hot to get to Naxos Mikri Vigla Beach?

Driving to Mikri Vigla Beach is fairly straightforward. The only thing to keep in mind is the dirt track, sandy road that leads to town. It is also possible to get here on a bus. Line 1 from Chora goes to Mikri Vigla and Line 3 goes to Pyrgaki via Mikri Vigla.

What to expect at Mikri Vigla Beach Naxos?

Mikri vigla naxos
Kitesurfer on Mikri Vigla.
Mikri vigla naxos

Mikri Vigla is a small town that caters for an increasing number of kitesurfing enthusiasts with a few good accommodation options, a small range of taverns and cafes. There are two main beaches in Mikri Vigla – the northern beach – one of the best beaches of Naxos for kite and windsurfing due to its strong north wind, and the southern beach which is calm, perfect for non-surfers that enjoy sun lounging and swimming. If you’ve never surfed before, know that learning kitesurfing is one of the best things to do in Naxos, and Mikri Vigla is the perfect place!

If you want to visit Mikri Vigla on a day trip, come first to the kitesurfing beach to watch the surfers. This sport is really fascinating, and I really would love to try it one day. After admiring the skills of the kitesurfers, head to the southern Mikri Vigla beach to chill and swim in the calm waters.

Who is Mikri Vigla Best for?

Mikri Vigla Naxos

Mikri Vigla beach is an excellent place for kitesurfing enthusiasts and those that would love to try it. It is also a great place to come and watch the kitesurfers from the beach flying above the sea and doing cool tricks. It is a very windy beach so it’s not really the best place for sunbathing or swimming. For sunbathing and swimming, head to the southern part that experiences much less wind.

Best Time to Visit Mikri Vigla

Any time of the day is good to visit Mikri Vigla Naxos, so you can easily fit it into your day trip itinerary of Naxos.

Things to know/take to Mikri Vigla Naxos

Glyfada Beach boasts a wide stretch of sand separated from the rest of the island with picturesque sand dunes and old cedar trees. The beach is largely underdeveloped and never gets too busy, so it is perfect for those wanting a quiet beach day.

There are a few places where you can rent a sunbed and umbrella in season, but most of the beach is just sand and sea. Glyfada beach similarly to Mikri Vigla is also a kitesurfing and windsurfing beach so strong wind is common here.

Apart from driving yourself, which is straightforward, there is a bus Line 3 that goes from Chora through Vivlos all the way to Pyrgaki and stops at Kastraki beach.

What to expect at Naxos Kastraki?

Kastraki beach boasts powdery, white sand and turquoise, crystal clear water. Kastraki winds along the shore with many different bays, which are perfect for those wanting to experience a beach day in a secluded location.

The beach is largely underdeveloped and unspoiled, when you visit you realise how quiet and serene the coast is here! Sometimes, Kastraki can get a little windy, but the wind is not as strong here as at the neighbouring Mikri Vigla beach.

Kastraki Beach of Naxos

Who is Kastraki Naxos Best for?

Kastraki beach is the perfect place for a secluded beach day. You can find a small cove and make it your private beach for the day or even sunbathe topless!

Best Time to Visit Kastraki Beach?

Any time is good to arrive at Kastraki beach similarly to other Naxos beaches in this part of the island. Kastraki Naxos is the ideal place to spend all day relaxing.

#13 Grotta Beach Naxos

Grotta Beach Naxos

Where is Naxos Grotta Beach?

Grotta beach is located in the northern part of the centre of Chora, you can find it on your right while walking towards the Temple of Apollo. You can also access it from the northern side of the old town.

Hot to get to Grotta Beach?

You can easily combine Grotta beach with visiting the historic centre of Naxos Town and the Portara. All Chora attractions are located from each other within a walking distance, so I recommend leaving your vehicle in one of the municipal car parks. If you travel by bus, the bus station in Chora is on the main road, right by the entrance to the port.

What to expect at Grotta Beach Naxos?

Grotta Beach Naxos

Due to its northern facing location, Grotta beach is usually super windy and the sea is rough. Why then, do I recommend this beach in this post? It’s because Grotta beach is super picturesque and as a photographer, I loved taking photos of it!

Grotta beach is small and instead of sand, it has a layer of small pebbles. If you want to snap some cool shots of this unique beach, access it from the path leading to Portara. From this point, you will get a panoramic view of the entire beach with a small hill with Cycladic whitewashed cube houses in the background.

Who is Grotta Beach Best for?

Grotta beach Naxos is for anyone visiting Naxos Town, especially for those that love taking photos and can appreciate the unique beauty of this beach.

#14 Apollonas Naxos Beach

Apollonas Naxos

Where is Apollonas?

Apollonas is located on the northern coast of the island, 36 km away from Chora. Because the drive takes around an hour, the village of Apollonas largely remains under the radar of mainstream tourism on Naxos.

Hot to get to Apollonas Beach Naxos?

The town of Apollon Naxos is a little remote and it will take around 1 hour to get there by car, scooter or ATV. There is also a bus that goes to Apollon Naxos – take Line 5 that goes from Chora up the coast to Apollon.

What to expect at Apollonasd Naxos Beach?

The village is far away from pretty much all the other best places and things to do in Naxos island. Apollonas served as a fishing village and a port from where the Naxian marble was exported. Today, the village is a sleepy place with a few tavernas, a limited number of guesthouses and rooms for rent and a small, sandy beach. The most famous attraction is a half-finished, almost 11 metres tall statue dating back to the 6th century BC. The archaeologists believe the statue is probably representing Dionysus. You can find the Kouros Statue of Apollon near the village entrance.

Who is Apollonas Beach Best for?

Kouros statue.

Apollonas Beach is for those that want to explore the quaint town of Apollonas and see the huge and fascinating Kouros statue. Otherwise, there are much better beaches in Naxos that are way more accessible for those that are interested predominantly in finding a good beach.

How to Get to Naxos?

Direct Flights to Naxos

The only direct way via an aeroplane to the island is Athens to Naxos flight. Several airlines serve this connection and these are Olympic, Sky Express and Aegean. Use a flights browser such as Kayak to find the cheapest or best flight.

Naxos airport is situated on the western coast of the island, an 8-minutes drive from Chora. You can hire a car, take a taxi or a bus to get to your Naxos accommodation.

How to get to Naxos from the UK?

As there is no direct flight between the UK and Naxos, you will need to fly to Athens and then go on a flight Athens to Naxos, which operate multiple times per day. You can also take a ferry to Naxos from Pireaus Port in Athens. Check the next section for more information.

Naxos Ferries

The most common way of getting to Naxos is taking a ferry either from Athens or, if you’re island hopping in the Cyclades, from another island. Several companies service the route between the Cycladic islands in Greece such as Seajets, Blue Star Naxos, and Hellenic Seaways.

If you want to save some money on the ferries that can be costly, especially if you’re island hopping, I recommend booking your fares way in advance. I always use Ferry Scanner to look for the best tickets. If you’re planning your trip to Naxos at peak season, booking your ferry in advance makes even more sense, especially if you’re not very flexible on dates. If you book online, Ferry Scanner offers an extended free cancellation period in case your plans change.

When searching for tickets, you will also notice that slower ferries can be a lot cheaper, so if you don’t mind a 2-3 hours longer trip, booking a slower ferry can be a good way of saving some money.

Travelling on ferries is an experience in its own right! Remember to arrive early as the boarding process and loading the vehicles is swift, and boats don’t wait around and usually leave on time. Also, always check ahead of time if your ferry is scheduled to go on time. Ferry services rely on good sea conditions, and cancellations are common, especially in September and October when there are more chances of strong winds.

Ferries to Naxos from Athens

Athens to Naxos ferry is the most popular route and the most frequent service. Ferries Athens to Naxos leaves multiple times a day from Piraeus or Rafina ports to Naxos Town. Depending on the ferry, the journey takes anything from 3 to 5 hours. For ferry schedules and prices, check Ferry Scanner

Ferries Santorini to Naxos

A ferry Santorini Naxos is another popular route with multiple ferries scheduled daily. The trip takes from 80 minutes to 3 hours, and during summer holidays, ferries get booked out quickly, so consider booking online if you’re travelling during that time.

Ferries Mykonos to Naxos

The same applies to ferry Mykonos to Naxos. The journey takes between 35 minutes to just under 2 hours, and online booking is recommended for travels between July and August. Because the two islands are so close to each other, taking a day trip from Naxos to Mykonos is a popular form of visiting the more expensive Cycladic sister island.

Ferries from Crete to Naxos

A ferry Crete to Naxos is way less popular and less frequent. There is only one ferry from Crete to Naxos with Seajets that takes 3 hours and 30 minutes. If you’re not flexible on dates and travelling during the peak season, make sure you prebook your Crete to Naxos ferry online.

Ferries from Paros to Naxos

Ferries Paros to Naxos are frequent and the journey takes between 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the route of your ferry Paros Naxos. If you are short on time, you can also visit Paros on a day trip from Naxos if you take a fast ferry.

Ferries from Milos to Naxos

Milos island is quite far from Naxos and there is only one ferry per day with a journey time of almost 4 hours.

Ferry from Ios to Naxos

There are a few ferry services per day between Ios and Naxos. Ios is a much smaller island. It takes around 60 minutes to get there by ferry, which means you can also visit Ios on a day trip.

Car Rental Naxos

Car Rental in Naxos is super common and widely available on the island. I found that online car rental costs the same as doing it in person on arrival, and it saves you the hassle of shopping around on the island. It also makes sense to prebook the car online if you’re travelling during the peak season.

I usually use DiscoverCars to search for the best car rental option and always opt-in for the full insurance cover to save myself unpleasantries such as paying an excess fee for damages. Also, check if you need an international driving licence to drive in Greece. If you’re from one o the EU countries or the UK, you can legally drive in Greece with your country driver’s licence.

ATV Rental Naxos

naxos ATV, getting around Milos

Riding an ATV vehicle is also a popular form of exploring the island. ATVs are easy and fun to drive, and they are good at riding off-road. If you’re planning to visit places like Plaka Beach, Aliko Beach, Hawaii Beach, Pyrgaki, you may want to consider getting an ATV as an alternative to a car. I was travelling on a scooter in that area, and at times the road was very tricky with sandy, slippery surfaces.

The downside of renting an ATV is they are almost as expensive as car rental and may be unpleasant to drive in windy conditions. The prices start at €50 per day. If you decide on an ATV vehicle, make sure you rent it from a reputable dealer. Always check their reviews and get yourself insured. You may also require an international driver’s licence.

TIP | If you want to rent it for more than one day, try negotiating down the price. You may also offer a cash payment to get a better deal.

Scooter Rental Naxos

scooter rental Naxos

Probably the cheapest way how to get around Naxos other than the bus is renting out a scooter. Since I lived in Bali for a long time, this was my preferred way! I rented a scooter in Naxos Town for €20 a day in September and I paid cash.

You will probably need to negotiate a little and pay in cash to get a similar rate, but it’s entirely possible! Before you decide on renting a scooter, make sure you have the appropriate driving licence suitable for scooters. They actually check it in every rental shop! If you’re from the UK, a full driving licence is sufficient.

If renting a car in Naxos is not your cup of tea, you can also travel around the island on Naxos buses. There is a private bus Naxos company that runs several lines connecting all the places worth visiting on Naxos such as Plaka Beach, Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Glyfada, Aliko, Halki, Filoti and even Vivlos with Naxos Town and making using buses in Naxos easy. Bus ticket prices are also very reasonable costing anything between €1.8 and €5 for a single trip. I’m leaving a link to the Naxos bus schedule below.

Bus Timetable Naxos

Best time to visit Naxos?

Naxos experiences its peak season during July and August when the island receives the most visitors, hotel prices are at their highest and so are the daily temperatures averaging around 27 degrees Celsius.

June, September and October are the perfect months to visit Naxos island. You can expect plenty of sunshine, temperature averaging in the mid-twenties degree Celcius with seawater staying at above 20 degrees Celsius as well, which is ideal for swimming. During this time you can also grab some good deals on accommodation and rentals and enjoy half-empty Naxos beaches.

How many days in Naxos?

Naxos is the biggest Cycladic island which is impossible to visit on a day trip. Luckily, all the most exciting things to do in Naxos and Naxos best beaches are concentrated on its western coast. To fully appreciate the island’s beauty and the best of Naxos, I recommend spending here at least one week.
